Since finishing work (in Sweden) we have travelled 700 miles north to the Arctic Circle. Before we started our pilgrimage towards the midnight sun, I had thought the Artic Circle was just a cold place, yes, one of the 5 major circles of latitude on earth, but that was about it. I hadn't really considered that the line signifies the most southerly point on earth where the sun will not set on the longest day. Anyway, we drove 270 miles yesterday to get here at 11.45pm and it was truly fantastic to experience it, partly because the rain had finally stopped (after 4 days) and it was so light with the blue sky and snow! Today we are recovering before planning our onward journey north and west.
